Meck 1 does three community service projects at the District level: Halloween Safe Haven, Scouting for Food, and a beautification project for our sponsor, Huntersville United Methodist Church. These are events that the District takes an active part in for one day. This page contains information about several seasonal and ongoing projects you can do with your troop. Additional ideas for service projects can be found in FYI and in the Charlotte Observer's Annual Guide for Giving.

Kim B is currently compiling a list of community service projects for leaders. If you have any suggestions, please let her know. She's interested in in projects ranging from simple enough for Daisy troops to more involved.

Ongoing Projects

Adopt a Police / Fire Station

Many thanks to Marie N for coming up with this great way to say thanks to the hardworking folks who protect our loved ones. Your troop can "adopt" one or more of our local fire or police stations for a month. Adoption can consist of doing several nice things for the station over the month: taking treats to them, sending them handwritten thank you notes, giving them movie passes or video store gift cards and popcorn, donating a plant or fresh flowers to brighten their space, or giving them gift cards for take out food. Most stations will be glad to give your troop a guided tour if you arrange it in advance.

This is a great "kids helping kids" project in which Girl Scouts of all ages may participate.  Since 1993, Operation Christmas Child has delivered 31 million shoe box gifts to needy children in 120 countries. For many of these children, these simple boxes filled with small toys, school and art supplies, hygiene items, and wrapped, hard candies represent the first gift they have ever received.

This year an estimated 7 million boxes will be collected and prepared for shipment at six major Operation Christmas Child processing centers in the U.S., one of which is located at 2345 Township Road in Charlotte.

Your troop can drop off their boxes in person and take a tour of the center. Call 1-828-262-1980 to make arrangements.

Collection week for boxes is November 15 -22, 2004. For step by step instructions, see How to Pack a Shoe Box.
